It’s called Zellij, the striking patterns painted or carved on plaster or wood known the world over as Moorish tile art. Endless combinations of squares, triangles, stars, diamonds, polygons and crosses, fit together in precise mosaics on walls, ceilings and floors in buildings and gardens all over Morocco.
Math marries artistic expression.
Enhancing these mosaic patterns are colors, usually brown, white, green saffron, blue and black. These, in turn, match with the basic Elements of existence which inspired Greek (western) philosophy. Air – pales and pastels; Earth – browns and neutrals; Fire- reds and oranges; Water – blues and greens.
These elements of nature are also foundational in Native American culture. Ancient Chinese cosmology lists five elements – fire, earth, water, metal and wood that weave in and out of each other.
In Ghana, Adinkra symbols blend art with math to create patterns that convey spiritual concepts, teach aphorisms, adorn cloth, and comment on contemporary society.
Moorish mosaics do more than decorate. They can also produce an almost hypnotic effect, similar to kaleidoscopes, that can deepen meditation and spark creative inspiration.
On The Inner Road, the artwork that surrounds us in Marrakech is another of the evocative signposts inviting us to examine how the elements and colors resonate on our body mind spirit. They dance in an interplay of frequency and vibration that stimulates the senses, heightens emotions and calms the mind, opening doors to other realms within.
