Wild, uninhabited, desolate, forbidden. Though the desert may appear devoid of life, it is anything but! It is arid land, yet it teems with life.
Driving a jeep in the peaks and valleys of the desert is like being on a roller coaster, or an ocean-skimming speed boat. It takes experience and skill to know when to gun the motor, which way to turn the wheel, and how to navigate the gullies and waves of sand that stretch to the horizon.
Hot in the day, cold at night, it forces skills of adaptability. Then there are the times you must shield your head and face, turban style, from the relentless sun or blinding
sandstorms.
Riding the undulating backs of dromedaries (Moroccan camels) harkens back to the caravans of ancient millennia.
What do these “ships of the desert” teach us about adjusting and thriving in harsh conditions: the way they tread with both lightness and surety on shifting sands; their ability to store water in their bodies for the long distances between oases.
How can the view of the desert plains from high on a camel’s back, help us expand our own vision for our lives?
